Identity theft is rampant globally

Telling creditors and credit bureaus that you’ve become a victim is not enough. You will have to file a police report. Then file claims for all fraudulent activity with every creditor on every account that has been affected. Victims often spend years and thousands of dollars clearing their name and cleaning up the mess identity thieves leave in their wake. Some victims may obtain new social security numbers because they aren’t able to fully reclaim their identity.

Don’t become a statistic. Stay alert, check your bank statements as often as possible and your credit report at least annually. You are entitled to one free credit report from all three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) once every 12 months. Shred outdated bank statements, credit applications, offers from cable and utility providers, and anything with your personal information on it.
